Why We Built CIRCA, Ltd

Back in 2005, our background was not in running an insurance company—we were leaders of a handful of elite construction business building projects across the country. But, we all had something in common. Each of us saw a gap that needed filling in our approach to managing construction risk. Key ingredients were missing in all of the conventional solutions: they focused more on coverage than safety, they offered very little control of the program, and profit share was impossible since we had no ownership of the solution. They didn't measure up, so we began to think more creatively.

Turns out we weren't alone in our desire to fill that gap. We had friends out there—construction companies at the top of their game who shared our vision, and were ready to help each other become safer and stronger. So we gathered a select group to form CIRCA, Ltd. It's our unconventional solution custom built to focus on safety, control, and profit—one that did not exist in the traditional insurance market. The solution that all of us were looking for.

More than control, and more than profit, safety is the heart of our mission. When safety is the priority, it positively impacts every aspect of your company. This belief has turned us into safety educators. We know that it's priceless, and we're dedicated to building a member culture where everyone is joined together by their primary concern for it. Safety is the foundation on which control and profits are built.

We move forward as a team. When you become a member of CIRCA, you gain access to a network of peers who continually share their best practices with each other. Whether it's a face-to-face meeting where all members gather around a table, or a quick phone call from one member to another to help resolve a safety issue—our shareholders know that we win when all of us are safer. We don't just raise the bar, we help each other over it. And, when the level of safety rises, so does each employee's quality of life. As a result, risk is better managed, claim numbers drop, and profits grow.

Being part of the solution requires ownership in the process. Once ownership of your insurance program is introduced, control is a natural byproduct. And, when ownership is shared by members who also share your passion for safe work environments, risk is greatly reduced, and profits follow.

Enhanced safety, more control, and access to profits can all be achieved, but only if your insurance program is owned by its members and not an insurance corporation. This is what made the captive insurance solution so attractive to us—all members share a common goal and bring valuable insight to the group. Working together to be safer is how insurance becomes profitable. 

Insurance program control sounds like a paradox, but we knew control was within our reach. The method of attaining it just needed to be unorthodox—not your traditional insurance solution. 

Traditional construction insurance doesn't incentivize your company to be safer, and it doesn't provide measurable control over the program. The policy is written, you pay the premium, and the cycle repeats at renewal. Control is relegated to answering the annual policy update questions. True control, the kind we are all looking for, can only be found when you are an integral part of the solution—not just a consumer of insurance.
